Veterans Prevail at General Tire Carolina Super Pull

June 15, 2010

The General Tire Carolina Super Pull had been plagued in the past by inclement weather, but picture perfect pulling weather prevailed for two nights of high horsepower action.  While The Rockstar Energy Drink Super Modified Two Wheel Drive Trucks had already been in action on the Champions Tour circuit,  this event marked the debut of the E3 Super Modified Tractors and Unlimited Super Stock Tractors.

The Unlimited Super Stock class showed that small changes can make a big difference. Jeff Hirt’s hard work over the winter paid off with a win on Friday night and a third place finish on Saturday.  His new chassis, built with the help of Brian Deikman,  was able to hook up the extended horsepower of his Styer Seed Ferris Mowers  Runin Bare All American.  The Roberts Pulling Team made their presence felt in the early season hook taking first, second and fourth place on Saturday and second, third and ninth on Friday all without the help of two of their drivers.  John Evans was on his own driving all three vehicles in the class while Jim Alderink focused on the tune ups.  Normal drivers Tim Howell and Jason Evans were absent due to farming and family obligations respectively but will return at the next event.

Racing legend Ken Veney found himself as the first hook in the class of E3 Super Modified Tractors each night and sailed out the gate, showing the officials that the sled needed just a few more weights.  On Friday he made the decision to come back shortly after his run for the official pass which landed him the win.  But after taking some heat from veterans Bill Leischner and L.D. Nation, Veney decided after a change to the sled setting to come back in the order right between his wily comrades.  While his run earned him a fourth place finish for the night, he earned bragging rights over the other two while Steve Bunnage took bragging rights for the class with Takes a Lickin’ Keeps on Tickin.  The hemi powered machine received an overhaul over the winter compete with freshened motors and a brand new chassis that sailed straight down the track.  And after revitalizing the Shel Shocked machine by adding a fourth Brad Anderson Hemi, Stan Shelton took home a duo of runner up finishes in only his second season of competition inside of the E3 Spark Plugs Super Modified category.

The Rockstar Energy Drink Super Modified Two Wheel Drive truck class was dominated this weekend by distinguished drivers Keith and Ricky Long and newcomer John Mumma.  Keith Long piloted Ridin Dirty to wins on both nights and stormed through the tough field of trucks in the MAVTV truck to take second and eighth in the battle.  Willy Makit remained one of the most consistent trucks in the field capturing third and second over the weekend and rookie John Mumma continues show that all his years of sideline experience help him in the driver’s seat taking a  fourth and third place finish with After Midnight.  His teammate Jared Nelson in the Rockstar Energy Drink truck seems to have fine tuned his program earning a pair of sixth place finishes and moving up in the points.
