Competitors Clash in Concord for Champions Tour
June 9, 2010
The Carolina clay will put pullers to the test as the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League rolls into Concord Speedway, this weekend, June 11th and 12th for a stop on the Champions Tour circuit with the General Tire Carolina Super Pull. E3 Sparkplug Super Modified Tractors, Unlimited Super Stock Tractors and Rockstar Super Modified Two Wheel Drive Trucks compete for essential points in this early season event as they chase down the coveted Champions Tour crown.
This opening event for E3 Sparkplug Super Modified Tractors is much anticipated as teams spent the winter revolutionizing their programs in order to knock off reigning champion Bill Leischner in his Rockstar Energy Drink Dirtslinger. Leischner took the victory at the Carolina Super Pull to open the season and never looked back on his way to taking the championship. With a tough running program, you could always find L.D. Nation and his Brad Anderson powered 4 Aces machine at the top of the results but look out this year as he debuts a brand new twin turbine Speedco Indian Outlaw. A pioneer in turbine powered machines, Nation sold his turbine powered machine in 2008 in order to run a new program in 2009 with four reciprocating motors. He just couldn’t stay away from the turbines and started work late last season to put the new machine together. With tow machines in the class, he’ll have an advantage on the track, but a disadvantage in the pits with double duty on the mechanical side. Fairing well in his rookie season with the SMTs, Stan Shelton decided this winter to up the power on his Shel Shocked machine by adding a fourth motor. The second motor will add 1,000 horsepower to his multi-engine monster topping out at a whopping 10,000 horsepower.
Last weekend provided to be hectic for the Rockstar Super Modified Two Wheel Drive Trucks as they opened the season in Knoxville Tennessee for the Speedco Great Smoky Mountain Shootout. Teams spent the weekend laboring to fine tuning their motors for the cool mountain air and clay track with seven trucks finding the right setup to place in the top ten each night. The weekend belonged to Jeremy Nelson and his Midnight Gambler, a ’41 Dodge panel van, as he took a win on Saturday night and fifth place on Friday. The weekend was rewarding for Nelson who blew up his motor last year in Knoxville and experience motor problems just two weeks ago after not making adjustments over the winter. Just behind him in the points race is the MAVTV truck from the Glasgow Kentucky stables of the Long brothers who have proved over the years that their experience gives them an edge on clay tracks. This second event will produce wheel standing action, amazing the fans and battling for points.
Unlimited Super Stock tractors will also open their season at the General Tire Carolina Super Pull with past champions favored early for this event and several competitors looking to turn around their odds. With several championships in the category under their belt, the Roberts Pulling Team looks to help John Evans defend his title in The Big Toy II. With two other vehicles in the category, this team is always on top. However, Jeff Hirt looks to change that up for the 2010 Champions Tour season with a brand new experimental set up on his Ferris Mowers Runin’ Bare All American. Hirt changed his turbo setup from two chargers in one stage feeding into a huge bottom charger to three chargers in the first stage feeding into the bottom charger during the second stage. Only one other tractor in the field has tested this method and is still working out the kinks. And with the help of Brian Diekman, Hirt spent the winter building a new chassis, one that he thinks will pour more horsepower to the ground. Only fans at this event will get to witness the first pass on the new machine to see if Hirt’s changes can put the Ferris Mowers Runin’ Bare All American past those extremely competitive Roberts Pulling Team machines.
